When it rains
On a rainy day, it is best to postpone beach and archaeological site visits and head for indoor venues instead. The city's largest archaeology museum, Antalya Museum, is closed and its building has been demolished; a new building is currently under construction. Nevertheless, there are numerous museums to visit in the city centre and Kaleiçi, a large aquarium complex in Konyaaltı, and a museum and science complex transformed from an old factory in Kepez. This guide brings together indoor venues to fill a rainy day. For detailed information on which museums are open or closed, you can check the Antalya Museums guide on our website.
Museums in Kaleiçi and the city centre
Suna & İnan Kıraç Kaleiçi Museum
Operated by Koç University AKMED, the museum consists of two registered historic buildings in Kaleiçi. The properties were purchased and restored by Suna and İnan Kıraç in 1991, and the church building was opened in 1996 as the museum's exhibition hall. One of these is the Hagios Georgios (Aya Yorgi) Church; according to the Karamanli Turkish inscription above the door, the church was renovated in 1863. The church building displays Çanakkale ceramics from the Suna and İnan Kıraç Collection, while the other building features ethnographic sections depicting traditional life in Antalya.
Antalya Toy Museum
Operated by the Metropolitan Municipality, the museum is located on the street leading down to the Kaleiçi Marina and is one of the easiest stops on a rainy day for families with children.
Atatürk House Museum
According to the promotional document of this small ministry-run museum, the first floor features a documentary about Atatürk's visits to Antalya; the second floor includes a room where his personal belongings are displayed and a section exhibiting coins and banknotes minted since the founding of the Republic. The visit takes little time.
Antalya Ethnography Museum
Listed as open on muze.gov.tr, the museum showcases artifacts reflecting the traditional lifestyle of the Antalya region.
Konyaaltı: Antalya Aquarium
Antalya Aquarium is an indoor entertainment complex on Dumlupınar Bulvarı in Konyaaltı. At the heart of the complex lies a 131-meter aquarium tunnel. Under the same roof, you will also find Snow World—a cold indoor hall filled with snow—and the Face 2 Face Wax Museum; these sections are mostly visited with separate or combined tickets. The complex is located in the Arapsuyu neighborhood, close to the Konyaaltı beach promenade; if the weather clears up after the aquarium, you can step out to the shore. It easily fills half a day on a rainy day.
Kepez: DokumaPark
Dokuma Park is an urban park and museum complex established on the grounds of a former textile factory in Kepez. According to the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the park houses Antalya Science Center, the Once Upon a Time in Antalya Museum, and the Anatolian Martyrs Museum. The complex also features Kepez Municipality's Anatolian Toy Museum; the factory's former administrative residence has been converted into a museum cafe called Dokuma Yeşilçam. The Anatolian Toy Museum should not be confused with the Antalya Toy Museum in Kaleiçi; plan them as two separate museums. Although the park's outdoor areas are not practical in the rain, the museums and science center are all indoors.
Caves and Covered Bazaars
Caves are also a great option on rainy days. Damlataş Cave on the coast in Alanya and Karain Cave to the north of the city are detailed on our website; since reaching Karain requires a short walk, take extra care when the ground is wet. For shopping, İki Kapılı Han to the north of Kaleiçi functions as a covered bazaar; for details, check out our guide to Antalya's Markets and Bazaars.
