About
Patara is a Lycian city located near the town of Kalkan in Antalya's Kaş district and served as the capital of the Lycian League. It was one of the six cities of the Lycian League that held three voting rights. The meetings of the Lycian League were held in the league's parliament building located in the city. The port city of Patara, referred to by the Greek historian Herodotus as the sacred center of the god Apollo, was the capital of the earliest known representative democracy in the world. It is stated that the elected representative system of the Lycian League played an important role in shaping the Constitution of the United States. In 2009, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as part of the Ancient Cities of Lycian Civilization heritage site.
