About
Antiphellos, originally known as Habesos, was an ancient coastal city in Lycia. The Greek name of the city is first seen in an inscription dating back to the 4th century BC. Initially settled by the Lycians, the city was occupied by the Persians in the 6th century BC. It gained importance during the Greek era, serving as the port for the nearby inland city of Phellos. However, as Phellos declined in importance, Antiphellos became the largest city in the region and gained the right to mint its own coins. During the Roman period, it received financial support from Opramoas, a philanthropist from Rhodiapolis, who helped rebuild the city after the earthquake that devastated the region in 141 AD.
