Kuvayi Milliye Destanı
Nazım Hikmet

Director & Actor: Yaşar Gündem

"Kuvayi Milliye Destanı - The poem (epic) Kuvayi Milliye, which Nazım Hikmet began writing in 1939 and completed in 1941, is an epic in which the poet narrates the War of Independence in chapters. In Kuvâyi Milliye Destanı, Nâzım Hikmet develops a distinct discourse grounded in an anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist Western perspective aimed at expressing the liberation of the Anatolian people. Brought into expression through an implicit language, this discourse originates from a Marxist worldview within the framework of socialist thought. Consequently, he views the War of Independence 'differently from the conventional concept of a heroism story'. In Kuvayi Milliye Destanı, even if not stated overtly, a materialist, socialist worldview is strongly felt within the 'internal fabric' of the work.

It is a masterpiece that impacts the reader differently each time it is read. In fact, this epic is the heroism of the overlooked footnote people in the national war of independence... In Kuvayi Milliye, Nazım Hikmet crafted the Turkish language like a crochet hook whose thread is Turkish."
