Synopsis: Written and performed by Ecem Erkek, the one-woman musical play Kara Kız is the story of a girl growing up in a traditional family during the 90s. Not the story of those little princesses dressed in pink with fluffy skirts riding high on their father's shoulders, but of the girl in a market-bought wool dress, tights, and knit booties, belly dancing to Mezdeke at her mother's gold gathering. The story of the 'kara kız' (dark-haired girl) who earned on her own the love given unconditionally to children, through the strength of her wrists and neck moves... I know it sounds all too familiar… When our heroine is stood up by her boyfriend on New Year's Eve and thinks she will be all alone, she finds a mixtape she made as a child. With that mixtape, she embarks on a laugh-filled journey into her childhood and youth, washing carpets on the street, ironing her hair, and dancing the halay at her cousin's wedding. On the way back, she hears a familiar voice she once blamed for her insecure spirit… Her mother!... A song she had never heard her mother sing before. But finally, a song they can sing together. A New Year's Eve couldn't get any better than this. Well then, here's to us, mom, let's sing along!
